Thought of the moment
So I’m waking up this morning listening to WTOP here in the DC metro area and they’re talking about the increased ridership on the DC Metro system due to high gas prices again. I think I’ve blogged about this before actually, but I still find the reality interesting. WTOP was talking about a statement by the Chairman of Metro’s board Christopher Zimmerman. I think Zimmerman said the right thing when he said that the increased ridership is what they actually want at Metro. They’d rather people take public transportation than drive vehicles. Now they just have to find a way to accomodate them all. If anything, the high gas prices has forced people to stop driving and that’s not entirely a bad thing.
It helps with traffic congestion and carbon emissions. Even if the car corporations get hurt because of declining sales; that’s what they get for off shoring manufacturing jobs in the first place! Look, I’m not a fan of Big Oil and the windfall profits they are making from this, but at least there’s something good coming out of this. I only feel sorry for people who don’t live close enough to public transportation and need to drive.
