Problems at the Hilton in Crystal City

with 7 comments

Stand with HERE Hotel Workers July 2nd

Following in the footsteps of the Baltimore City Center Sheraton, the massive hotel corporation Columbia-Sussex is clamping down on hotel workers at the Hilton in Crystal City. Since their contract expired, the company has refused to cooperate in negotiations, has been laying off workers while expecting others to carry the load, cutting supplies workers need to do their jobs, disregarding seniority, erasing pensions and replacing them with 401k’s workers can’t afford to pay into, replacing affordable health insurance with astronomical rates worker’s can’t afford to pay, and countless other blatant abuses to human decency and worker’s rights.

The workers have endorsed a boycott of the hotel. On July 2nd at 5 pm, in front of the Hilton in Crystal City at 2399 Jefferson Davis Highway in Arlington, they’ll be protesting Columbia-Sussex.

    You certainly wouldn’t expect such things from large companies.

    Hello, wake up people. This is happening in all industries. It’s called economic slowdown, and we all feel the pain.

    But this ongoing protest is ridiculous. I live across the street from the Crystal City Hilton, and would like to be able to study in the afternoons, and lately other times of day also, without this annoying disruption.

    The guests at the Hilton don’t care; they’re out seeing the sites, they didn’t know there would be a protest here when they made their reservations, and different guests will keep coming. Hilton knows this, so knows the protest won’t cost them anything.

    Those of us who have nothing to do with the dispute, however, have come to hate your union and wish you’d all lose your jobs and go away.

    When the Nazis came for the communists,
    I remained silent;
    I was not a communist.
    Then they locked up the social democrats,
    I remained silent;
    I was not a social democrat.
    Then they came for the trade unionists,
    I did not protest;
    I was not a trade unionist.
    Then they came for the Jews,
    I did not speak out;
    I was not a Jew.
    When they came for me,
    there was no one left to speak out for me.

    You see you can say to hell with these workers now. But when after you finish your studies and get that job you always wanted and one day management screws you–who will speak out for you? You think their protests are having no effect? If takes a very long time for any campaign against a corporation to be won. There are labor fights that have gone on for years but that doesn’t mean you give up.
