Dear Sallie Mae

without comments

To Whom it May Concern:

First let me say that you make it extremely hard to send an email to anyone other than investor relations. Actually, I wanted to send this directly to your Human Resources department but since this is the only form I found, I will send it this way.

Today someone in your Human Resources department made a huge mistake. You laid someone off and treated them as just another number. Just because they were a contract employee you felt that you did not owe this person any explanation whatsoever as to their sudden demise within your corporation. You did not even let this person say goodbye to the people he worked with. You think because someone is a temp or a contract employee that you can dispose of them as you wish. I’ve got news for you however, they are people too. Many corporations make this mistake actually. I know it’s hard for you people to be decent, but you would think that your second quarter losses of seventy two percent would temper your arrogance—apparently it has not.

John Smith (name has been changed) is a hard working, motivated and dedicated person. I can’t tell you the amount of times he’s come through on projects for me. He is a good web developer and it is Sallie Mae’s loss to let him go. Yet, it was your decision to let him go, and I’m not actually questioning you on this matter. It is your right to terminate people as you wish (at will, temp or contract employment I would assume), but you at least should extend them the decency to tell them why. Instead you decided to brush him off expecting him to scamper away without making a whimper. It does not work that way. I’m writing to let you know that. I’m making some noise for him.
