Some water bottles still contain BPA

without comments

The study, in the journal Chemosphere, found that some types of aluminum bottles are lined with an epoxy resin that leached even more BPA into water than did the plastic bottles that they were meant to replace. Epoxy resins also are commonly used to line food and beverage cans, and a Consumer Reports investigation found that almost all of the 19 name-brand canned foods we tested contained BPA, which some studies have linked to health effects including reproductive abnormalities and an increased risk of breast and prostate cancers, diabetes, and heart disease.

This is pretty pathetic. We can’t get anything right can we?

BPA: What’s the matter with Virginia?

without comments

This synthetic hormone can leach from packaging and into the food and drink inside, where it can make its way into the bodies of growing children.  Studies have linked BPA to an increased risk of cancer, diabetes and other diseases, prompting eight states, Canada and the European Union to ban it in certain children’s products.

via Buy Safe, Eat Well:.

Today I got an email from Consumer’s Union the people behind Consumer’s Reports alerting me to the fact that the Commonwealth of Virginia where I reside has not yet banned Bisphenol-A the chemical that makes plastics really, really unsafe. If you are in a state like mine which has not yet acted they have set up an e-Action for you to contact your state representatives. After all when a chemical has entire web page on the HHS website devoted to safety measures one might say it is time to rid ourselves of this menace.

American Chemistry Council Hates Babies

without comments

As a result of some super intense, 11th-hour lobbying from the ACC yesterday, the Senate decided to move forward with S. 510 sans Feinstein’s proposed amendment. Public health and consumer advocacy groups like Consumer’s Union, the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), and the Breast Cancer Fund are naturally outraged by the decision. It’s a move that unabashedly puts corporate interests way above the health of consumers — even consumers that are cute, little, snuggly-wuggly babies.

This is rather disgusting. The ACC wants to keep BPA in your child’s bottle.

The food processing world is reeling right now one day after a shocking new series of tests released by Consumer Reports revealed that many leading brands of canned foods contain Bisphenol A (BPA)—a toxic chemical linked to health risks including reproductive abnormalities, neurological effects, heightened risk of breast and prostate cancers, diabetes, heart disease and other serious health problems.
