AFL-CIO, AFSCME want Michael Dell to step down from Dell

without comments

The AFL-CIO and AFSCME  are asking Dell Inc. shareholders to withhold their votes from Michael Dell, the company’s chairman and CEO, at the annual shareholder meeting Aug. 12. The AFL-CIO and AFSCME, which both own Dell shares, say the company would be better served by removing Michael Dell as chairman.

Last month, Dell postponed its annual meeting to give shareholders time to consider a proposed settlement of a complaint filed by the Securities and Exchange Commission SEC. The SEC complaint alleged that payments from microprocessor manufacturer Intel were improperly disclosed to shareholders and that “cookie jar” reserve accounts had been manipulated. Under the proposed settlement, Dell Inc. agreed to pay a $100 million penalty and Michael Dell agreed to pay a $4 million penalty.

Dell settles for 1.75 million in legal fees

without comments

Tsk, tsk, tsk there Dell.

Computer maker Dell brought an end to several suits brought by shareholder groups and an investigation into its past financial practices by coughing up $1.75 million in legal fees and by agreeing to tighten up its accounting and corporate governance rules. Dell had been accused of misrepresenting its financial health to investors after an accounting probe was made public in 2006 — while top execs and directors sold stock at inflated prices.

It’s not only financial corporations who misrepresent data.

Chinese factory that supplies IBM, Microsoft, Dell, Lenovo and Hewlett-Packard to be investigated

with one comment

It wold appear that this factory in China “dehumanizes” people.

The report by the National Labor Committee, a human-rights group based in Pittsburgh, covers the work environment in the Meitai Plastic and Electronics factory in Dongguan City, Guangdong, China. According to the report, released this month, workers sit on hard wooden stools for 12-hour shifts, seven days a week. Overtime is mandatory, with workers being given on average two days off per month.

It’s possible that the keyboard you’re typing on could be the product of sweatshop labor.
