Will drilling really lower gas prices?

without comments

President Obama just announced plans to increase drilling in the Gulf of Mexico and Alaska. He’s obviously doing this because high gas prices threaten any progress the economy may have made.  This in turn hurts his reelection prospects for next year. Yet, does this move by the President help to lower prices especially when it is really Wall Street that are the culprits?

Why do oil corporations get subsidies anyway?

Obama vs. oil companies – The Week

Fighting back, the president said over the weekend that, while there’s no “silver bullet” to lower gas prices, he’s appointing a Justice Department–led task force to investigate potential fraud by market speculators. He also called for an end to $4 billion in federal subsidies for oil companies “at a time when they’re making record profits and you’re paying near record prices at the pump.”

It makes perfect sense to me. Sure they probably spend milliions of dollars on exploration but the profits they reap are enormous.

Is P.Diddy an elitist?

without comments

Alright so I hear P. Diddy is asking for his Saudi Arabian brothers and sisters to send him some oil for his private jet. He’s upset that he has to fly with the “regular people”. Now there would be many that would dismiss him right out as being an elitist. You know, one of those celebrities that John McCain and the GOP love to paint liberals and Democrats as being. Part of me wants to attack him as such too. Just another Paris Hilton. Yet, knowing where he grew up and where he’s come from I can’t easily do that. Although I will say that he could have probably expressed his concern about high oil costs a little differently. The cost of oil is high for those people sitting with him in coach as well. What about the people who can’t even afford to buy a plain ticket? They face high oil prices at the gas station too. Even people who take public transportation or ride in taxi’s face the high cost of gasoline. So Mr. Diddy of Mount Vernon, NY you’re not the only one dealing with the problem. How about joining up with Al Gore or T. Boone Pickens over there and really do something about it? Why not lend your voice to helping perfect and find alternative forms of energy. You see, one day the cost of oil is going to go up and stay up until it is completely gone. We’ll simply run out of it. Your Saudi Arabian brothers and sisters will not have anymore oil even for themselves. Your private jet is going to need to run on something else one day in the very near future.

Sean Combs is a success story. He’s a successful businessman and we should all applaud that. If there is one thing I’ve noticed about him is that he’s one of the hardest working people in his business. He came from a very humble beginning and now he has done something great with his career. Granted I’m not into Hip Hop or the music his label puts out, but I can respect what he’s accomplished. As the head of a major company who needs to travel a lot—obviously it used to be more economical and less stressful to move around in a private jet as many CEO’s and other executives do. He’s simply traveling ten times as much as the average person. So I can’t knock him for having a private jet. Although until that private jet can use fuels other than oil maybe he might need to start flying business class at least. Welcome back to the rest of the collective P. Diddy. You’ll find it’s not as bad as you think it is. Other famous people and executives travel just fine without private jets. I think you’ll be alright.

Heating Oil is going to be costly this winter

without comments

How sad is this?

In a season of roller-coaster energy costs, the drop in oil and natural gas prices in recent days was greeted as good news. But they remain so high that experts are predicting that heating bills this winter will far exceed those of last year.

Looks like Hugo Chavez and Citgo may have to help out the poor in the United States as it concerns heating oil once again.

“This could be the winter of our discontent,” said Daniel J. Weiss, a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress. “This is going to have a huge impact. It will start to pinch people in September and October and could influence this fall’s elections. Remember, it is much easier for people to drive less than it is to heat less.”

We may have to ask Joe Kennedy II and Citizens Energy for a lot of help as well. Citgo actually worked with them to provide heating oil to those in need in the past. Also, my favorite senator Bernie Sanders says that we need a huge increase in Lilheap funding.

Because Oil Prices are High Will Manufacturing Return to the US?

without comments

I really find this ironic.

Rising costs are starting to eat into what American managers fearfully call the China Price, the once-formidable 40% to 50% cost advantage enjoyed by Chinese manufacturers-and demanded by customers. “Fuel prices just shot up so fast that everyone was caught flat-footed,” says Allen J. Delattre, who heads Accenture’s (ACN) global supply chain practice. “Now logistics costs are an overarching priority.” Richard Sinkin, a San Diego consultant who scouts manufacturing sites in the U.S., Mexico, and China for multinationals, also senses a major strategic shift. “A lot of clients who were thinking about going to China are now saying, Not at these prices,’” says Sinkin. “The high cost of fuel is going to radically transform the way people look at the geography of their manufacturing.”

Well I guess the rise in oil prices has a silver lining in an otherwise dark cloud. However, if manufacturing were to begin to return to American shores, don’t think that corporations won’t still be looking to cut costs at the expense of workers anyway. I think too many of them got used to what they were able to get away with in China.
